Another Thing I Don’t Like
I recognize that main characters in an action-oriented drama are likely to be immune to harm. I recognize that there are a variety of reasons this is the case, and am mostly reconciled with the reality.
But I am annoyed when, in the presence of a Reset Button, main characters are suddenly disposed of in an attempt to increase drama.
It’s much more interesting for main characters to have things occur to them with lasting consequences and appear in multiple episodes, even permanently. This creates a sense of verisimilitude and aids immersion.
Suddenly breaking out consequences, when the audience knows they’re about to be unmade, is tedious and cheap.
