Belief

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.

– Philip K. Dick

Isn’t that really why people cling to absurd beliefs? Things that make sense, even if they’re really important to people, don’t go away because you doubt them. But nonsense, once questioned, evaporates – so when the foundations of our emotional lives rest on a foundation of nonsense, we’ll do anything to avoid exposing it to skepticism.

People hold on to absurdity because they have a lot at stake – when their lives are at stake, they dig in with their fingernails.
