Favorite Words

Aristocracy

I’ve always had a weakness for words that also mean their opposite. An aristocracy originally was “rule by the best, or by those most suited for the task”. Now it means a hereditary ruling class that usually couldn’t govern its way out of a wet paper bag.

  1. Does it mean anything today? England is unlike its other European fellows in that it never had any revolutions abolishing the nobility, but they certainly don’t rule. Today our ruling class consists of Mandarins.

    Passion

    most people think of lust and lovemaking, but passion actually means suffering. look it up!
